Mastering the Basics: What You Need to Know About the Plastic Extrusion Process

Extrusion technology is one of the continuous, efficient, low-cost, and widely used plastic molding methods. It is an indispensable technology in the processing of polymer materials. After more than 100 years of development, plastic extrusion molding is one of the most important forms of plastic material processing technology, with a variety of materials that can be processed, strong plasticity, high productivity, strong adaptability, and a wide range of applications, such as the molding of chemical fibers, thermoplastic elastomers, and rubber products.

Our lives are closely related to plastic extrusion technology. As an established plastic extrusion line supplier, we'd like to share some basic information about the plastic extrusion process in this blog.

What is Plastic Extrusion?

The plastic extruder relies on the pressure and shear force generated by the rotation of the screws, which enables the material to be fully plasticized and uniformly mixed, and formed through a die. Plastic extruders can be basically classified into twin screw extruders, single screw extruders, as well as rare multi screw extruders and screw less extruders.

How Does Plastic Extrusion Work?

The main unit of a plastic extrusion line is an extruder, which consists of an extrusion system, a transmission system, and a heating and cooling system.

The extrusion system includes screw, barrel, feeder, mold. The plastic is plasticized into a uniform melt through the extrusion system, and under the pressure established during this process, it is continuously extruded by the screw.

The transmission system of the extruder drives the screw and supplies the torque and speed required by the screw during the extrusion process, Usually composed of electric motors, reducers, and bearings.

Heating and cooling devices are commonly used in extrusion machines; The cooling device is set up to ensure that the plastic is within the temperature range required by the process.

Where Is Plastic Extrusion Used?

The application of plastic extrusion is inseparable from our lives.

The products of plastic extruders include pipes, plates, rods, sheets, films, monofilaments, cable coatings, various profiles, and composites of plastics and other materials. About 50% of thermoplastic products are now made by extrusion molding. In addition, extrusion technology is also commonly used for coloring, mixing, plasticizing, granulation, and blending modification of plastics. Based on extrusion molding, combined with blowing and stretching skills, it has developed into extrusion blow molding and extrusion stretch molding. It can manufacture products such as hollow blow molding and biaxial stretching films.
